How We Bee-came
The Palo Cedro Honey Bee Festival began in 1980 as a way to raise money for a park in the area. The festival was organized by local honeybee business owner Lois Park and her husband Homer, and it featured a Bee Costume Contest and a pie baking contest. The festival grew over the years and eventually included a craft fair featuring only handcrafted items. Emilie Reedy later took over as the leader of the festival and helped to ensure that the proceeds were used to complete the Palo Cedro Park, which had been Lois Parks' original dream.
In the early 2000s, the festival moved to Bishop Francis Quinn Catholic Campus and continued to grow in popularity, becoming the largest attended craft fair in Shasta County with an annual visitor count of 6-8000. Volunteers from various organizations, including Boy Scout troops and Pioneer High School, helped to make the event a success each year. The festival merged with the Palo Cedro Park organization, which had been working to establish a community park for many years, and the proceeds from the festival were used to fund various park projects, including the fence, gate, water, trails, and playground.
